A baby dying
The story behind the poem
This poem is not written from personal experience
(Thank God)..... however having had two healthy precious baby
daughters grow up safely does not prevent me from thinking about all
the people in the world who have suffered the tragedy of losing a
child.
There is a very old gravestone in England that marks the place where
an infant child was laid to rest. The inscription on the gravestone
is simply:
IF IT IS SO SOON I'M DONE FOR
WHAT ON EARTH WAS I BEGUN FOR?
This struck me as a very simple way of a grieving parent asking God
why a child should die.
If I was God I would have no explanation that I can think of to
answer that question.
Although the poem is very sad , I would like to think there is still
some divine purpose to the presence of us all on the earth, however
brief our stay may be.
