Impressions of Venice
The story behind the poem
Although
we now live in Italy, this poem derives from my only visit to Venice
which was 20 years prior to the move. I toured the city with an old
University friend who knew it well, and was able to soak up the
atmosphere in out-of-the-way places as well as heavily-frequented
ones. Although I found the city beautiful and exciting, it lacked -
for me - the grounded quality which might have made me want to live
there. It seemed somehow precarious, artificial. Nonetheless, I would
like to go there again to see if my impressions are any different on a
re-visit. by Damaris West Read the poem
