The man in the mirror
The story behind the poem
This story is brief but telling. The poem comes from a
sensation that we all feel at one time or another, the thought that,
ultimately, we have failed those who depend on us to meet their
standards of what we should be.
I have been seriously ill, and that illness now will cost my family
their home. I married into this family, getting two stepsons along
with my new wife, and the last fifteen years have taught me that I
am the provider and nothing more to this family unit. In that time,
I have gradually lost everything to my medical problems, leaving me
bankrupt and unable to do a thing about it.
Only poetry gets me by these days, and this one helped me remember
just who I really am.
