Maxi
The story behind the poem
We had our lovely Bedlington Terrier Maxi put to sleep
by a vet a year ago.
She was 15 yrs old and had been with us since the day we collected her
from a local Dogs' Rescue Home as a bewildered puppy. She was scruffy,
nervous, and a bit dim, and totally, totally wonderful. She was a light
in our lives and I miss her every day of my life. She had apparently
been suffering, and the vet put this down to kidney problems that were
common in Bedlingtons and were incurable.
We didn't want her to suffer and yet...I have been burdened ever since
with such enormous guilt because she placed her trust in us so entirely.
Did I assist in ending her life too quickly? She was still mobile at the
time. Should I have done more?.
The truth is I will never know.
People who have never loved and lost a pet will probably think that I am
a bit ridiculous to be so sentimental...and I can understand why they
would think that, but Maxi was so devoted to us and touched our lives so
deeply I had to write about her.
