The betrayal
The story behind the poem
I enjoyed a relatively idyllic childhood, and so this
poem is a work of complete fiction. It attempts to tell the story of
a man abusing a young boy ....and how the boy has now grown up
living with the secret that no child should ever have to bear. It is
a dark and sinister thing to try to write about, made more difficult
because I have no concept really about how an abused child feels. I
deliberately made the abuser out to be a kindly figure on one level
... but who uses this kindness as a weapon to lure an innocent
child. I am still unsure what possessed me to write about it as it
disturbs me to think of children being damaged in this way. But we
know that things like this are still happening so we should never
ignore this terrible betrayal of innocence.
