Will we remember?
Running from trench to trench
the sound of war echoing through the night
The single movement of a finger
can end a man's life
There is no escaping the sights and sounds of death
breathing hard he pulls the trigger
watching a young boy's blood stain the field
closing his eyes he wondered
Will he be remembered?
That was when the bombs started falling
all around him
explosions lit up the sky
the field and trees surrounding him
were engulfed by the flames
he watched the soldiers scream
as the fire raged around them
consuming them
looking away he hoped
that they would be remembered
falling on his knees
he crawled behind a boulder
though still not safe
an indescribable chill ran down his spine
as he looked behind him
time froze when he watched a young soldier
raise his gun and aim
the last sound he heard was the boom of the young boy's gun
his vision blurred and his blood streamed out of the side of his
neck
his last thought was
'Will they remember me?'
The war ended and broken-hearted mothers wives and children came to
claim them
all were identified
all but one
weeping families walked past him to claim those nearby
until finally he was the only one left
no-one knew who he was
or where he was from
the cause of his death obvious
a single bullet-hole in the side of his neck
now known as the anonymous soldier
the one without any history is more famous than any other
will we remember those who died
like a soldier without a name
will we remember them all?
