Slave
The story behind the poem

I wanted to create a poem about slavery. We studied it in History a while ago and I thought I'd portray life there how I'd imagine it.

The first and second lines are the feelings and things that are happening to the slaves as they are being worked to death. The third line represents the amount of people forced into slavery. 'Under one rule' implies the fact that all the Black slaves were taught the same rules and were all made to conform to it. 'Dead by the billions' uses rhyming with millions but also represents how many were killed/died as well as line 3.

Verse two talks about the terrible space conditions, and the fact that they were made to live in their blood, excrement and even vomit. Line 4 'Not to be freed until facing their doom' means that (apart from being cleaned every two or so weeks) they weren't allowed light or fresh air until they were 'unloaded' to work in plantations for their selfish employers.

The 3rd verse talks of the pain the slaves were put through and their feelings of humiliation.

Line 12 'And what did they gain?' is asking: What did the slave employers gain from their cruelty?
The final verse explains the answer and expresses the emotions felt by slaves.

I hope you enjoyed reading this poem as much as I enjoyed writing it.
