Rachel ... and the crash downstairs
The story behind the poem
This poem describes a defining moment for me. My
daughter Rachel who was aged about seven years old at the time was
downstairs playing with her Yo-yo (it was the craze at the time)
when it slipped off her finger and smashed into an expensive Lladro
ornament of Moses holding the Ten Commandments.
I ran downstairs to find a broken ornament, a Yo-yo and a frightened
child.
In anger I slapped her thigh...but much too hard. In my anger I
actually left finger marks upon her leg. I was so shocked that I had
hurt her that I simply cradled her and cried ... I couldn't believe
what I had done. This was not the first time I had smacked one of my
children for being 'naughty'... it was however the last time.
By the following day my daughter had forgotten all about the
incident... I never did.
