Dream garden
The story behind the poem

I love the idea of a secret, magic garden. This one doesn't have exotic blooms or rainbow-plumaged birds; it is only unusual because of its atmosphere and because no-one who goes there ever makes a mark or leaves a trace of themselves behind.

My inspiration came from hearing about 'The Garden of Fand', a tone poem by the composer Arnold Bax. (A friend of mine was a great fan of his.) Fand is an Irish sea goddess who lives on a magical island. The island is 'otherworldly' in the Celtic sense of belonging to a parallel world inhabited by spirits; the garden in the poem could also belong to this world.
