Goldfinches
The story behind the poem

Where we live in Umbria, Italy, goldfinches are a very common sight. They have an ethereal charm as they flit and twitter among the trees and grasses which makes them seem more like sprites than birds. At one time they were my favorite bird; maybe they still are.
